Artist's Statement

This collection was born more from reflection than intention. Over the last year I have often found myself behind my camera. Whether it is on a long solo hike or a stroll around a city I have never been, there is something joyful is slowing and focusing purely on the most intriguing or beautiful aspects of a moment. More often than not, my mind was just as busy as my feet as I wandered. More heavily than ever before, I have the weight of a faith that was never mine. As I have walked away from it, I have found it increasingly difficult to appreciate the light. When it was overwhelmingly clear that I had lost my wonder for the world, I started using my camera to bridge the gap to awe.

That chase after each moment’s beauty is where the second half of my title comes from. ‘Nostalgia’. That feeling we get when we reminisce on our purest memories. Nostalgia, where we remember everything in its best version. ‘Borrowed’ is a touch literal. My cameras have all been borrowed or gifted from family members. In part, I owe them for giving me this way to see the world. The majority of this collection was shot on my great grandfather’s Pentax, a camera that predates me by two decades. Shooting film at all is a bit of a borrowed tradition, since I have grown alongside the digital age where poloroids are novel. Film has the effect of reorienting present moments to appear as pictures from old shoeboxes and vinyl photoalbums. I hope to hold today with the same reverence as those old photographs, so I capture my experience in their form.

Borrowing a little nostalgia for myself.
